I imagined him taking on the roles relating to communication. Negotiating deals, pulling connections, social engineering, etc. Telepathy may feel uncomfortably intrusive, and generally it's still humans that navigate civilization as independent agents, with Pokemon usually being treated more like assistants or accessories. So he can reach where Pokemon typically can't.

I don't have a strong opinion on his trainer status, but I think it might be nice if he wasn't and the two worked together without a sense of "obligation". Scare quotes because obligation implies power dynamics, and the Pokemon setting usually doesn't get that nitty gritty about Pokemon-trainer relationships, so I wouldn't want to shove too much realism in there either.

I skipped some of the recent Pokemon games, so sorry if this is building on bad info!
